One of the doll sets I have created recently has been the space travel set, which has been a really fun challenge. Of all the pieces in this set, my favorite props were the helmet and spaceship. For the helmet I used a plastic christmas ball that could be opened and closed on a felt hinge to accommodate a doll’s tall hair. For the spaceship I preferred the visual of a flying saucer to that of a traditional spaceship. This created the problem of figuring out how the doll would fit inside without making the ship too big to fit comfortably into the camera shot. My solution to this problem was to essentially build the ship around the doll’s head with the weight of it resting on their shoulders. Then I created a black paper tube that came out of the bottom of the ship to hide the body and blend into the painted background. The flying saucer was made from paper plates and recycled plastic. The final look is somewhat cartoon-like because the ship is too small for the body, but I find it fun looking. Unfortunately, the use of clear plastic makes this set significantly harder to photograph, but with extra effort it has been working.
